Help save horses
HSUS is working hard to end the suffering endured by more than 100,000 horses each year that are hauled across the country and cruelly slaughtered for human consumption overseas. Time ran out for the legislation in the Senate during 2006, following an overwhelming House vote, but support is even stronger in 2007.
Tell your legislators to end the slaughter of America's horses for foreign consumption.

On Friday, Jan. 19, after years of litigation, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit finally upheld a 1949 Texas law banning the sale of horsemeat for human consumption. The Humane Society of the United States had filed an amicus brief in the case in March 2006, arguing in favor of the state law banning horse slaughter. Two of the three existing horse slaughter facilities in the United States are located in Texas, and as soon as the ruling goes into effect, Illinois will stand alone as the last state where American horses are slaughtered for foreign diners.
As you know, U.S. Reps. Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), Ed Whitfield (R-KY), John Spratt (D-SC), and Nick Rahall (D-WV), and U.S.
Sens. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and John Ensign (R-NV) recently introduced H.R. 503/S. 311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. This legislation would ban horse slaughter in the U.S. and stop the export of horses for slaughter across our borders.

On Friday April 27, 2007, the U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly (277-137) to restore a 34-year-old ban on the commercial sale and slaughter of America's wild horses and burros. Yesterday, the bill to ban the sale and transport to slaughter of all American horses cleared a critical Senate committee by a decisive 15-7 vote. These victories move us even closer to banning horse slaughter in the United States permanently.
Your calls and emails are key to winning this fight. Please help keep the momentum going: Click here to urge support for restoring protections to wild horses and burros.
To shut down the horse slaughter industry in the United States and to stop horses from being exported to other countries for slaughter -- where they face longer transports and an even more grisly death -- we need everyone who cares about horses to get involved. Click here to urge support for banning the slaughter of all horses.
