End animal fighting
![]()
"Dog fighting, cockfighting, and hog-dog fights (dogs pitted against hogs in small, enclosed spaces) are cruel and brutal bloodsports. In a typical fight, animals are drugged to heighten their aggression and forced to keep fighting even after sustaining injuries such as pierced lungs and gouged eyes. These fights are held for the "amusement" and illegal gambling of handlers and spectators, including children. Not only are animal fights cruel to the animals forced to fight, they pose a threat to public security and safety. Some dog fighters steal pets to use as bait for training their dogs, and some allow trained fighting dogs to roam neighborhoods and endanger the public.
The Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act (S. 382/H.R. 817)—has been introduced to strengthen current animal fighting law by authorizing felony-level jail time for the interstate and foreign movement of animals used for fighting and of weapons use in cockfighting."
Please take action: Urge your representative to bring the animal fighting prohibition enforcement act up for a vote NOW.

Did you know that Amazon.com is peddling materials that are both illegal and cruel to animals? It's true: Amazon.com is selling materials that promote cockfighting and dogfighting, and The Humane Society of the United States has been pressuring the company to remove these materials for many months.
Yesterday, the online retail giant told HSUS that two dogfighting DVDs would be pulled from the site. This is a win for the dogs abused and killed in dogfights, but in the past Amazon.com has removed similar videos only to offer them for sale again later.
Amazon.com must make a clear commitment to keeping all promotions of illegal animal fighting off their virtual shelves.
Now, Amazon.com must also cease its unsavory profiteering from The Gamecock and The Feathered Warrior, magazines that sell illegal animal-fighting paraphernalia and call attention to cockfighting venues. These magazines are the glue that holds together the criminal cockfighting industry in this country, and Amazon.com is their main internet subscription tool.
Today, please join us in telling Amazon.com that it's time for a zero-tolerance policy against the violent spectacle of animal fighting for human amusement. CALL AMAZON.COM RIGHT NOW AT 206-266-1000 and demand that they stop collecting blood money from this exploitation of animals.
This is not an issue of freedom of speech or materials that are merely offensive, although they are that. The facts are clear:
Interstate distribution of materials that promote animal fighting is a violation of federal law. This week, The HSUS filed suit against Amazon.com and its suppliers to uphold that law.
TELL AMAZON THAT HONORABLE RETAILERS MUST REFRAIN FROM PROFITEERING FROM CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES.
Take action now:
-
Use Amazon.com's web form to make your point.
- Then, please forward this alert to your friends and family so that they can make the call against animal fighting, too.
Thank you for taking action and for all you do for animals.

I sent an email to Amazon.com in regard to their products promoting animals fighting and this was their response:
"Thank you for writing to Amazon.com with your concerns about our product selection.
As a retailer, our goal is to provide customers with the broadest selection possible so they can find, discover, and buy any item they might be seeking. That selection includes some items which many people may find objectionable. Therefore, the items offered on our web site represent a wide spectrum of opinions on a variety of topics.
Amazon.com believes it is censorship not to sell certain titles because we believe their message is objectionable. Therefore, we will continue to make controversial works available in the United States and everywhere else, except where they are prohibited by law. We also allow readers, authors, and publishers to express their views freely about these titles and other products we offer on our web site.
However, Amazon.com does not endorse any opinions expressed by individual authors, musical artists, or filmmakers.
We value all feedback from our customers, and thank you again for taking the time to send us your comments about this issue. We hope you will allow us to continue to serve you.
Sincerely,
Customer Service Department

I guess Amazon.com is not willing to comprehend that Interstate distribution of materials that promote animal fighting is a violation of federal law.
This legislation would authorize felony-level jail time for violations of the federal law on animal fighting (dog fighting, cockfighting, hog-dog fighting) and ban interstate and foreign transport of cockfighting implements. Unanimously approved by the Senate during the last Congress, it stalled in the House, but is off to a great start this year -- it was reintroduced the first day of the new Congress and more than half the House joined as cosponsors during the first week.
Tell your legislators to crack down on animal fighting.

Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act (H.R. 137) by a landslide vote -- 368 to 39. It's thanks to your calls and emails to your Representative that HSUS was able to secure such a decisive victory. Click here to find out how your Representative voted.
Now, we need to focus on the U.S. Senate in order to complete the effort to make it a federal felony to move fighting animals or cockfighting implements across state lines or foreign borders. Please help and make a short polite phone call to your Senators.
With your help, we can end animal fighting.

On May 3rd, 2007, President Bush signed the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act into law. This is the culmination of an almost six-year campaign by The Humane Society of the United States and our allies to enact meaningful federal penalties for animal fighting.
The law took effect immediately. It provides felony penalties for interstate commerce, import and export related to animal fighting activities, including commerce in cockfighting weapons. It will make it much harder for criminals who engage in dogfighting and cockfighting to continue their operations. Each violation of the federal law may bring up to three years in jail and up to a $250,000 fine for perpetrators.
We are fortunate to have had steadfast Congressional leadership on this issue. But this campaign would not have been a success without your tireless efforts. Thank you again to each of you who sent emails, made phone calls, wrote letters and visited your federal legislators on Capitol Hill and in their home districts.
This victory reminds us to never to give up, and that there are rewards for compassionate action and perseverance. Please share this tremendous news with others and let them know that you had a part in making it happen.
