Polar bears - S.O.S.
The Bush Administration has proposed to list the polar bear as "threatened" with extinction under the Endangered Species Act due to Arctic ice melt from global warming.
Though a huge milestone, the battle isn't over yet.
Polar bears live only in the Arctic and are totally dependent on the sea ice for all of their essential needs. The rapid warming of the Arctic and melting of the sea ice poses an overwhelming threat to polar bears, which could become the first mammal to lose 100 percent of their habitat to global warming.
The proposed rule to list the polar bear as threatened does not include a proposal for designating critical habitat protection. Global warming is the single biggest threat to polar bears' survival. Tell the Bush Administration that we must protect the polar bears and their critical habitat.
Time is running out. Without protection, the "foreseeable future" for the polar bear is less than 45 years.

You can take action in simple ways by giving up something to make the world a better place. Give up something for the next 40 days that contributes to global warming:
- replace incandescent light bulbs in your home with compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs). CFL bulbs use only a fraction of the energy used by incandescent bulbs and significantly reduce our carbon emissions.
- Commit to driving your car one day less a week and choose instead to walk.
- Ride your bike, or take public transportation.
- During the cold winter season, turn down your thermostat by two degrees.
- Buy produce that is locally grown.
- Install energy efficient appliances in your house with the EPA Energy Star label.

Here is a copy of the email sent to me by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (CA):
Dear Mr. Bakhtiar:
Thank you for writing me to express your support for legislation protecting polar bears. I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.
You will be pleased to know that I am a cosponsor of the "Polar Bear Protection Act of 2007" (S. 1406). Senator John Kerry (D-MA) introduced S. 1406 to strengthen polar bear conservation efforts under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation for consideration. On June 21, 2007, I voted for Senator Jack Reed's (D-RI) amendment to the fiscal year 2008 Interior, the Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill to help protect threatened polar bears from unsustainable trophy hunting. This amendment would prohibit the Fish and Wildlife Service from issuing permits to allow importation of polar bear trophies taken in a sport hunt in Canada or any other country. This amendment was approved by the Appropriations Committee and it will soon be considered by the full Senate, together with the rest of the Interior Appropriations bill.
I share your concerns about the protection of animals that may soon face extinction, including the polar bear. Global warming is the greatest environmental challenge facing the planet, creating the primary threat to polar bears as sea ice coverage recedes. Please know that I am working hard in Congress to make sure that we continue to protect animals and their habitats.
Again, thank you for contacting me. I hope you will continue to write on matters of importance to you. If you have any additional comments or questions, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841.
Sincerely yours,
Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator
