Stop the largest wolf massacres in decades
A Fish and Wildlife Service proposal believed to be released this month could allow the use of aerial gunning and other lethal control methods to kill as many as two-thirds of the wolves in Wyoming and as many as 54 of Idaho's 65 wolf packs!
We’re in the middle of one of the biggest fights in decades for our wolves.
Together, we’ve called on governors in Idaho and Wyoming to abandon their plans to slaughter wolves within their borders. Together, we’ve expressed outrage to federal officials on their proposal to eliminate Endangered Species Act protections for Northern Rockies wolves before adequate state plans for wolf conservation are in place.
Now that the official public comment period on the misguided federal plan is open, we need to go on the record in our fight to protect these magnificent creatures.
It is important that federal officials hear what you have to say -- personalized comments are especially powerful.
Idaho and Wyoming lawmakers are planning to slaughter hundreds of wolves if the plan to remove federal protections for Northern Rockies wolves goes ahead. As many as 2 out of 3 wolves in Wyoming could be targeted with unlimited killing in some areas of the state.
In Idaho, the state’s official position -- passed by the legislature -- is that wolves should be removed “by whatever means necessary.” Governor “Butch” Otter wants to kill 80 percent of his state’s wolves -- and has gone so far as to say he wants to be one of the first to shoot a wolf himself.
Federal officials must hear from conservation-minded people like you -- people who understand the importance of America’s wolves. That’s why we’ve set one of our most ambitious goals yet -- 200,000 comments.
We can stop massacre, but only if we work together.

Last week marked the end of the public comment period on the Bush/Cheney Administration’s plan to eliminate vital Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in the greater Yellowstone area and the Northern Rockies -- a plan that could spark the worst wolf massacre to occur in the Lower 48 United States in decades.
More than 139,000 submitted written comments opposing the administration’s plan -- generating more than half of all the comments submitted on the proposal.
Hundreds of wildlife supporters from Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Washington state showed up to bravely testify in person on behalf of common sense wolf management, outnumbering anti-wolf groups at almost every hearing.
More than 69,000 people have viewed Defender's YouTube video, making it one of the most viewed animal clips on that site.
More than 8,000 dedicated supporters donated more than $386,000 in the last five months to fund the on-the-ground efforts to protect wolves, providing crucial support for public education, activist mobilization and work with local landowners to prevent unnecessary wolf and livestock loss.
The Fish and Wildlife Service will now consider the public comments on the Bush/Cheney Administration’s proposal to eliminate vital Endangered Species Act protections, with a decision on delisting expected within six months.
