Time to donate your clothes

Bailey's Cross Road Shelter warmly welcomes donations of clothing and shoes. Most donations are directly donated to the residents. You can drop off your donations during the day or on Saturdays during our shelter dinner events.

Trays for residents

The last time we were at the shelter, a volunteer pointed out that the shelter did not have food trays. So, residents have to make several trips to their table carrying their hot meal, salad, fruits and drinks. Ricci heard about this and donated 48 trays to the shelter. A big thank you to Ricci for his contribution!

AIDS Orphans

Do You know ??

KwaZulu-Natal is the Epicenter of the AIDS Pandemic.

The Department of Health’s annual report issued September 2004 showed 37.5% of the women in KwaZulu-Natal tested HIV positive.

Western KwaZulu-Natal’s AIDS orphans receive no help from any non profit organization or non governmental organization, except for the AIDS Babies organization.

Only one governmental agency, South Africa’s Department of Welfare, gives help to Western KwaZulu-Natal’s AIDS orphans. Unfortunately, the Department of Welfare’s budget for AIDS orphans has been severely reduced.

Skinned alive in China

"When undercover investigators made their way onto Chinese fur farms recently, they found that many animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them. When workers on these farms begin to cut the skin and fur from an animal's leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals who struggle too hard to allow a clean cut.

Petition for poultry

"Each year, more than nine billion chickens, turkeys, ducks, and other birds raised for food are slaughtered in the United States with no requirement that their deaths be humane—more than one million birds killed every hour without legal protection.

Stop the slaughter of China's dogs

I thought you might be interested in this Humane Society International campaign to save dogs in China.

The recent killing of more than 50,000 dogs in southwestern China has prompted worldwide outrage and underscores the need for animal protection laws in China. There are currently no laws on the books in China that would protect companion animals.

Please contact the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. on this issue now!

End animal fighting

"Dog fighting, cockfighting, and hog-dog fights (dogs pitted against hogs in small, enclosed spaces) are cruel and brutal bloodsports. In a typical fight, animals are drugged to heighten their aggression and forced to keep fighting even after sustaining injuries such as pierced lungs and gouged eyes. These fights are held for the "amusement" and illegal gambling of handlers and spectators, including children. Not only are animal fights cruel to the animals forced to fight, they pose a threat to public security and safety.

Stop the open season on black bears

"Our bears, who are already at risk from habitat loss and hunting in surrounding states, are unnecessarily killed for nothing more than a head on the wall or a hide on the floor.

Black bears were protected from hunting for 50 years until Governor Ehrlich instated a hunt in 2004, and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has escalated the number of animals killed without any meaningful long-term analysis of the effect of last year's hunt on the population.

Make a difference for seals

Canadian fishermen killed 330,000 baby seals for their fur in 2006 alone. Please fight the hunt:
1. Call on designers to top using seal fur.
2. Sign the pledge and boycott Canadian seafood.
3. Tell Canada's Prime Minister to end the seal hunt.
4. Tell your friends about this cruel hunt.
